HOPE [hōp] noun

The belief that the future will be better than the present.

You don’t have to do it alone

Couples get together for many different reasons, and each partner brings with them a unique set of experiences and values that influence their presence in the relationship. Problems in relationships can be difficult to navigate, and identifying what you need as a couple to function at your best can be even more challenging.

The good news is, with the right tools and guidance, you and your partner can find your way back to each other. You can learn to communicate effectively, prioritize your relationship, heal from relationship trauma, and learn how to offer each other the love and appreciation you both deserve.

HOPE Is Here To Help

Couples counseling provides a secure environment for you and your partner to address any concerns in your relationship that may not be functioning well.

Choose the one that sounds most like your relationship.

Premarital Counseling

You are planning a life together, and you want to begin it on solid ground. Premarital counseling gives you and your partner time to talk through the subjects that are easy to put off, such as finances, parenting, family expectations and how each of you handles conflict.

Each partner brings a unique set of experiences and values into the relationship. Understanding them now can make the years ahead easier to navigate together.

As you work with a therapist:

  • You will learn proactive strategies to understand potential areas of conflict and strengthen your bond.
  • You and your partner will learn to express your needs, desires, and concerns in a clear and non-confrontational manner.
  • You and your partner will set boundaries and expectations for your marriage together.
  • You and your partner will be encouraged to engage in activities that promote friendship.

Disconnected Couples

Despite still loving one another, under the weight of life’s obligations, you and your partner have drifted apart and begun taking one another for granted. You cherish the trust and dedication you have with your partner, but it’s disheartening to feel like roommates with the person you love.

While you’re happy enough now, you want your relationship to thrive and be the best it can be.

As you work with a therapist:

  • You and your partner will experience a renewed sense of closeness and emotional intimacy.
  • You and your partner will both feel excited about being a couple once again.
  • You and your partner will discover new things about each other and bring fresh energy into your shared activities.
  • You and your partner will reignite a relationship that feels fulfilling and rewarding.

Troubled Couples

Your relationship has been through ups and downs, but lately, the downs seem to be the norm. Maybe there has been infidelity, whether physical or emotional; maybe you’re having trouble recognizing the person you’re falling asleep next to each night.

But deep down, there is a part of you, no matter how small, that doesn’t want to give up on the love you once shared.

As you work with a therapist:

  • Together, you can assess the state of your marriage and determine if it is possible to restore your relationship.
  • You and your partner will recognize the negative patterns in your conflicts and work to break those patterns to develop healthier communication habits.
  • You and your partner will listen to each other’s concerns and grievances and show that you are committed to repairing the relationship.
  • You and your partner will take steps to increase intimacy and emotional connection.

We can also assist you in managing issues that cause stress in your relationship, such as communication difficulties, handling conflicts, parenting, financial concerns, or adapting to changes in your lives.

What Couples Therapy Looks Like at HOPE

HOPE Therapy Group helps the members of our community EMBRACE what is, DISCOVER what is within, HEAL from what was, and HOPE for what is to come.

Select a step to see what it means for the two of you.

We start with where your relationship is today

Your first visit is an assessment. Your therapist reviews the issues and difficulties that led you both to seek out therapy, and gets to know your history as a couple. It is a safe, non-judgmental space, and you have a choice in your provider.

We look at what each of you brings

Each partner brings a unique set of experiences and values into the relationship. Together we identify negative interaction cycles and gain an understanding of how your past experiences have affected your present relationship.

We make room for repair

As a trauma-informed practice, we help you and your partner listen to each other’s concerns and grievances and heal from relationship trauma. You recommit to addressing the problems instead of sweeping them under the rug.

You set the goals

Couples therapy seeks transformative growth through goals set by the couple. Your goals can include developing healthier communication methods, setting boundaries and expectations, and dealing with conflict. If you allow it, couples therapy can be a wonderful journey to rediscovering yourself, your partner, and the kind of relationship you both desire.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Gottman Therapy, also known as the Gottman Method, is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. The therapy is grounded in over 40 years of research and has been shown to be effective in improving relationship satisfaction and reducing relationship distress.

We can provide tools and techniques to address your needs, and we have specialists trained in evidence-based models including the Gottman Method.

FAQs

What can I expect on my first visit?

Your therapist will go through an assessment that reviews what issues, symptoms, and difficulties led you to seek out therapy services. It allows your therapist to get to know you and your history to see if the therapeutic relationship will be a good fit. You can choose your provider and discuss questions, concerns, and feedback with your therapist.

TherapyPortal, a safe and encrypted platform for storing confidential information, will send you the intake forms. After scheduling an initial appointment, you’ll receive an email with instructions to create a login.

How long and frequent will therapy sessions be?

Sessions are 50-60 minutes long. The frequency of therapy sessions will be up to you to decide with your therapist. Generally, in beginning therapy, you can expect sessions to be weekly or once every other week in order to build consistency toward resolving your symptoms or difficulties.

Do you offer premarital counseling?

Yes. Couples who are engaged or planning a future together can work with a therapist on communication, boundaries and expectations before the wedding. Let our intake team know you are interested in premarital counseling and we will match you with a therapist who is the best fit.

Can we do couples counseling online?

Yes. Telehealth is available throughout California, and in person sessions are available at our San Diego and Los Angeles offices.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. If you have one of the insurances listed above, it is important for you to verify your mental health benefits so you understand your coverage prior to your appointment. Some insurance companies require a prior authorization before the first appointment, or they will not cover the costs of services.

In addition, we do not bill secondary insurance or accept Medicare or Medicaid plans.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a document that lists the healthcare services provided by a professional along with the associated fees. Clients can use this document as an invoice to request payment from their insurance provider for services received outside of their network.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations or missed appointments without 24-hour notice will be subject to a $75.00 fee.
